Dhaka National Medical College was founded in 1994. It was acquired from its forerunner- The Dhaka National Medical Institute, which had marked its presence in 1925 as a part of Non-cooperation movement of the Indian Sub-continent against the Britishers initiated by the INC & IML (Indian National Congress and Indian Muslim League).
At that point of time, the movement urged upon the people to boycott the institutes/colleges that were established by the Britishers and to open up their own Indian institutions. Indians decided to open two medical schools – one at Calcutta and other at Dhaka with a name of Dhaka National Medical Institute.
As the consequence of 1972 independence of Bangladesh, the educational system of Dhaka National Medical Institute became doomed, although the concorded hospital remained active.
Taking the comparison into consideration, the first batch of the college, enrolled 63 medical students in the academic session of 1994-1995, wherein the session of 2018-2019, 130 students were admitted in the 25th batch.
